Story of Soori
Conceived by Soo K. Chan, the award-winning architect and founder of SCDA Architects, this project marks a full-circle return to the site of his childhood.
Born and raised in the very shophouses that now house the hotel, Chan grew up within the historic compound of the Khoo Kongsi Temple, the ancestral home of his maternal clan.
Located in the heart of George Town’s UNESCO World Heritage Site, Soori Penang stands beside Khoo Kongsi, one of the most ornate and significant clan temples in Penang. Built in 1906 by the prosperous Khoo family, the temple is a masterpiece of Straits Chinese craftsmanship, filled with vivid murals, intricate carvings, and cultural pride. For the owner and architect, this was once home—and it remains a living temple that still hosts vibrant ceremonies and festivals today.
As part of the global Soori Collection alongside Soori Bali and Soori High Line in New York, the property stands as a testament to the brand’s ethos: authentic experiences shaped by place, people, and design. Soori Penang invites guests to discover the hidden treasures of the island through intimate, curated experiences—offering a rare glimpse into the spirit of George Town, through the eyes of one who knows it best.
